About Us

Haiti Education Network (HEN) is a nonprofit organization based in both the United States and Haiti, dedicated to expanding access to education, music, the arts, sports, and other enrichment opportunities for underserved children and youth.

HEN was founded on a simple belief:

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.

Across Haiti, young people possess extraordinary creativity, talent, determination, and potential. Yet too many children grow up without access to the teachers, equipment, mentorship, training, and opportunities that could help them discover and develop their gifts.HEN exists to help close that opportunity gap.Through partnerships with local organizations, schools, communities, artists, musicians, coaches, educators, and diaspora supporters, HEN works to bring opportunity closer to where children live. Our goal is not simply to provide activities.

Why This Work Matters

For many young Haitians, access to music, the arts, and sports is limited not because of a lack of talent or interest, but because opportunities are concentrated in certain communities or are financially out of reach.
A child may have extraordinary musical ability but never have access to an instrument.
Another may have the potential to become an outstanding athlete but never have access to organized coaching, equipment, or a safe place to practice.
Others may possess artistic gifts that remain undiscovered because there is no program in their community where those talents can be developed.
HEN believes that geography and economic circumstances should not determine whether a child has the opportunity to discover his or her potential.
By investing in music, the arts, sports, education, and youth development, we are also investing in Haiti’s human capital.
Young people who are given opportunities to develop their talents can become musicians, athletes, educators, coaches, entrepreneurs, professionals, mentors, and community leaders.
They can make a difference not only in their own lives, but also in the future of Haiti.

Music Education: Bringing Opportunity to Every Community

Music has been one of HEN’s strongest areas of investment.
Haiti has a rich musical and cultural heritage, yet access to structured music education remains limited for many children, particularly those living outside major urban areas or in economically underserved communities.
HEN believes that every child who wants to learn music should have the opportunity to do so, regardless of where that child lives or the family’s ability to pay.

Partnership with CEMUCHCA
For the past five years, Haiti Education Network has partnered with CEMUCHCA, a nonprofit music-based organization in Haiti, to expand access to music education across the country.
The partnership is built around a community-based model.
Instead of expecting children and families to travel long distances to find music education, the goal is to bring music education directly into neighborhoods and communities.
Today, CEMUCHCA has approximately 90 satellite sites throughout Haiti and an additional 7 satellite sites in the Dominican Republic.
These satellite programs create opportunities for children to receive music instruction close to where they live.
HEN supports this growing network by providing:
  • Technical assistance
  • Capacity-building support
  • Musical instruments
  • Support for the development of community-based programs
  • Assistance with expanding access to music education
  • Partnership development and resource mobilization
This model helps empower individual communities to take ownership of music education for their children.
Rather than creating one large centralized program, HEN and CEMUCHCA are building a network that can reach children across the country.
Our philosophy is simple:
Children should not have to leave their communities to discover their talents. Opportunity should be brought closer to where they live.

A Vision for All 144 Communes

HEN’s long-term goal is to help expand this model to
all 144 communes of Haiti. We envision a Haiti where every commune has at least one accessible site where children can learn music, play an instrument, develop their creativity, and discover their potential.
The vision is not simply to open music schools.
It is to create a national ecosystem of opportunity.
Each community-based site can become a place where young people:
  • Learn an instrument
  • Develop discipline and concentration
  • Discover their creativity
  • Build self-confidence
  • Perform with other young people
  • Learn teamwork
  • Connect with positive adult mentors
  • Develop leadership
  • Celebrate Haitian culture
  • Imagine possibilities for their future
Music can become much more than an extracurricular activity.
It can become a pathway to personal development, cultural pride, educational achievement, and opportunity.

Sports as a Pathway to Opportunity

HEN also believes strongly in the power of sports to transform the lives of young people.
Sports provide much more than recreation. They teach discipline, teamwork, perseverance, leadership, responsibility, resilience, and respect.
For young people growing up in communities where opportunities may be limited, organized sports can also provide structure, mentorship, healthy relationships, and a strong sense of belonging.

Soccer and Haiti’s Young People

Soccer holds a special place in Haitian culture.
It is one of the country’s most beloved sports and is played and followed in communities throughout Haiti. For generations, young Haitians have dreamed of developing their talents and one day competing on the world stage.
Haiti’s return to the World Cup stage has brought renewed excitement and national pride around soccer and has inspired another generation of young Haitians to imagine what may be possible.
HEN wants to help transform that enthusiasm into meaningful opportunity.
